The course takes you step-by-step through the essential information needed to mix diving gases, including helium mixes such as trimix, in a safe and accurate way. Concepts are introduced in an easy-to-follow manual and illustrated with instructor lesson guides. The importance of handling oxygen correctly is dealt with extensively, including why high-pressure oxygen can cause fires or explosion if handled improperly. You are shown what types of materials are compatible with oxygen and why some kinds of 'standard' materials must be avoided.
And listen to this: on my course you will learn in practise how to O2 clean a scuba tank. Even better, bring your own tank to be O2 cleaned during the course!
The type of oxygen you can use, the quality of air needed to mix with it, and the various mixing systems are all covered, including partial pressure mixing, continuous flow, pressure swing absorption and differential permeability. These represent some of the practical options you might use for filling a cylinder, from the simplest case where you just add some oxygen and top up with air, to a sophisticated, high-output system.
Best of all, you do not need to use a lot of complicated formulas to work out the amount of gases to add to make a mix. That's where the Gas Mix Calculator (software) comes in... Three coloured sliders allow you to enter what amounts of oxygen, nitrogen and (if applicable) helium are already in the cylinder to be filled, and three more sliders allow you to dial in what you want.
